Supporting Immigrant Families Through Birth: 5 Organizations To Support

Tomorrow, Friday January 30th, communities across the country are participating in blackout protests and hundreds of coordinated demonstration to take a stand agains Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The goal is to disrupt business a usual to make the call for dignity, safety and justice for immigrant communities heard. As a doula, I could not support this cause more. One thing I’ve learned is that birth work is political.

What does politics have to do with birth?

  • Access to prenatal, birth, and postpartum care is shaped by laws, funding, and immigration status
  • Immigration enforcement and detention policies directly impact pregnancy outcomes and maternal health
  • Undocumented and immigrant parents often face barriers to insurance, hospitals, and culturally competent care
  • Birth outcomes are affected by systemic racism, surveillance, and fear of deportation
  • Family separation policies disrupt bonding, breastfeeding, and postpartum recovery
  • Who survives childbirth, who receives support, and who is criminalized reflects political priorities
  • Maternal mortality rates reveal deep inequities tied to race, class, and immigration policy
  • Maternity desserts leave entire populations without care during pregnancy or birth

Birth isn’t just personal, it is political. In addition to the horrific encounters between ICE where civilians have lost their lives, a woman was recently deported at 8 months pregnant and there are reports of pregnant mothers in detention centers experiencing bleeding, miscarriages, being shackled and other instances of medical neglect.

As a doula, as a founder of a company, and as a leader of the employees of this company, we care deeply. How can I add my voice? What ways can I contribute? What will make the most impact with the actions I can realistically take?

In my research I found five organizations that I will be working to support in the near future. From sharing a portion of our profits, to giving up my regular Starbucks habit, in order to donate the funds, to encouraging my kids to get involved, I have to believe that the small actions we take as a group matter in creating a better world.

5 Organizations To Support Considering Recent Political Events

1. ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) plays a critical role in defending the civil rights of immigrants through litigation, advocacy, and public education. From challenging unconstitutional detention and deportation practices to protecting due process and family unity, the ACLU works on the front lines to hold ICE and government agencies accountable. Supporting the ACLU helps ensure immigrants have legal protection and a powerful voice in the fight for justice.

2. Every Mother Counts

Maternal Health Is A Human Right. Did you know that around the globe, 700 mothers die in childbirth every day? Every Mother Counts works to solve this problem because mothers matter. They work to create legislation to improve access to life-saving care for women and infants around the world. Every Mother Counts has used the connection between storytelling and advocacy to inspire action and drive change ever since.

By focusing on advocacy, education, and community-based solutions, the organization addresses the disproportionate risks immigrant and marginalized mothers face before, during, and after childbirth. Supporting Every Mother Counts helps protect the health, dignity, and lives of mothers and families often left out of the system.

3. War Child

War Child supports children and families affected by conflict, displacement, and forced migration, providing access to education, mental health care, and protection services. As wars and political violence continue to drive families from their homes, War Child works to ensure refugee and immigrant children can heal, learn, and rebuild their futures with dignity. Supporting War Child helps protect some of the most vulnerable children impacted by displacement and border policies worldwide.

4. KIND (Kids In Need Of Defense)

KIND is dedicated to protecting unaccompanied and separated immigrant children by providing legal representation and advocacy. The organization works to ensure children are treated with dignity and have access to safety, stability, and long-term protection.

5. Al Otro Lado

Al Otro Lado offers legal aid, humanitarian support, and advocacy for migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, with a strong focus on families, pregnant people, and children at the border. Their work addresses immediate survival needs while challenging harmful immigration policies.

Simple Ways To Make A Difference

Making a difference doesn’t always require grand gestures—real impact often comes from small, collective actions. What if everyone gave up just one coffee and donated that amount instead? A few dollars may feel insignificant on its own, but multiplied across thousands of people, it can fund legal defense, prenatal care, or emergency support for immigrant families. The same is true for larger acts of generosity: when companies match employee donations or individuals with resources give at scale, the ripple effect grows even stronger. Whether it’s a one-time gift, a recurring donation, sharing resources, or showing up in solidarity, every action matters—and together, those choices help protect lives, families, and futures.
