Why I Love This Palm Spring Date Shake For Pregnancy

Recent studies from the Journal of Midwifery & Reproductive Health and the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology showed that eating six dates every day during the last four weeks of pregnancy can be pretty awesome.

Moms who had their daily dose of dates were less likely to need to induce labor and were less likely to have their water break before contractions began. When they got to the hospital, date-loving moms were more dilated than those who didn’t munch on dates. Plus, they ended up having fewer c-sections and other interventions. Looks like dates might just be the secret weapon for a smoother delivery!

But – dates can be too sweet and a bit difficult to stomach day after day after day all on their own. I love that adding them to greek yogurt and tossing in a few extra ingredients to bring some complexity to the flavor makes getting a daily dose of dates in easy!

One More Thing To Love About This Palm Springs Date Shake

Though this date shake may taste like a cold and delicious treat – it’s also packed with protein. Coming in at 27 grams of protein in one shake. And it comes from whole foods.

Why is that important?

Well, research published by Amy Haas in Midwifery Today shows that adequate protein in pregnancy can help prevent premature birth and other complications in pregnancy. But, here’s the twist. These results were only found when mothers get their protein from food sources, not powdered protein shakes.

There’s something about the complexity of food that we haven’t quite been able to replicate with our processed drinks yet. And that’s okay, because whole food like this tastes great and is easy to make.
