Let’s talk about the importance of protein in your pregnancy. Why do you need so much protein during pregnancy? Well, the expansion of blood volume and growth of the maternal tissues require substantial amounts of protein. Plus, the growth of the baby and placenta also places protein demands on you as a mama.

One enlightening study found that a whole food high protein diet on it’s own brought the preterm birth rate down from 12% to 2%. I can’t emphasize enough the need for whole food protein.

How much protein should you aim for? Think 60-80 grams in the first half of pregnancy and 80-100 grams in the second half of pregnancy. The more you can get this from whole food sources rather than protein powders the better!
