Why Are Barre Classes Good For You?

We all know fitness is in general a good thing. But barre offers some benefits you might not expect. Here are some of the reasons why barre classes are good for you:

  1. Strengthens and tones muscles: Barre classes focus on small, isometric movements. The movements target specific muscle groups, leading to stronger and more toned muscles.
  2. Improves posture: The precise movements in barre classes can help improve posture by strengthening the core and back muscles.
  3. Increases flexibility: Barre classes often include active stretching and lengthening exercises that can improve flexibility and range of motion. You both strengthen and lengthen at the same time. Win!
  4. Low-impact: Barre classes are typically low-impact. This means they are easier on the joints and pelvic floor. They can be great for people working around injuries or recovering from birth. (As a person that works with a lot of postpartum moms this is really important to me!)

Are Barre Classes Hard? 

One thing that I love about Barre classes is that they are both challenging and accessible. My first Barre class I could barely lift my leg off the ground. Now, it’s easy to hold a leg up parallel to the floor.

The aspirational pose for me is to get to a standing split. I’m not there yet, but I’m well on my way!

During a barre class, you can expect to use small, repetitive movements that target specific muscle groups. It is really surprising how challenging it is when you go to the most difficult part of an exercise and pause there. Elise, the trainor in one of the programs mentioned below calls this the burn zone. And trust me, whether your toe is still on the ground or you’re lifting it parallel to the groud or higher, your abs, legs and booty are going to burn!

The movements are designed to work your muscles to exhaustion. So you will definitely see an increase in muscle definition as you move through a Barre program. The classes will also include balance exercises and isometric holds that challenge stability and coordination.

While beachbody barre classes can be challenging, they are typically low-impact and can be modified to accommodate different fitness levels and injuries. Instructors provide variations and modifications. So if something seems too hard for now, you can work in your safety zone and watch your safety zone expand every week.

Overall, barre classes can be a great workout for those looking to improve strength, flexibility, and posture. While they may be challenging at first, with time and practice, you will build strength endurance, muscle and flexibility all while burning calories.

How Many Barre Classes To See Results?

Many of the women I am working with are trying to recover their body after having their babies. The body changes a lot during pregnancy, often the abs separate, so even if you lose weight, you still look a bit flabby and saggy. This is called diastasis recti. It is incredibly frustrating! I believe and have seen diastasis recti symptoms heal even years later.

And a well rounded, full body core program can help! That is one of the reasons I love Barre and Pilates classes.

The number of barre classes needed to see results can vary depending on several factors, including individual fitness levels, goals, and frequency of classes attended. However, as a general rule, most people will begin to see some results after attending barre classes consistently for a few weeks.

It’s important to note that consistency is key when it comes to seeing complete healing or weight loss.

On average, expect to burn about 200-300 calories in a 30 minute class. On top of burning calories, you will also be zipping the left and right side of the abdominal wall together, strengthening your deepest core muscles, gaining strength, lean muscle and making improvements in your posture.

Ultimately, the key to seeing results from barre classes is to be consistent, set realistic goals, and focus on progress over perfection. By attending classes regularly and challenging yourself during each workout, you can build strength, improve flexibility, and achieve your fitness goals over time.

Beachbody Barre Class Options

Beachbody Barre Class Option 1: Xtend Barre

Xtend Barre is taught by Andrea Rogers. She has a clear passion and love of movement which is contagious in these classes. This is not surprising for someone who has a classical comprehensive Pilates education and has not only been dancing since age 3, but spent time as a professional dancer.

She has created a very well rounded Barre and Pilates program with Xtend Barre.

How many classes are in Xtend Barre? Xtend barre is a 30 day program. Each workout is 30 minutes long.

What equipment is needed? All you need is a sturdy chair or ballet barre, a resistance loop, 2-3 pound dumbbells and a mat.

Biggest takeaway? Although the class is rated intermediate level, Andrea provides enough modifications that beginners can easily succeed here too. Andrea really explains correct form and helps you build core awareness and connection. Because of that, I think this is a really good place to start with Barre.

Beachbody Barre Class Option 2: Xtend Barre Express

Xtend Barre Express is also taught by Andrea Rogers. These classes are very similar to the ones above, but are only 15 minutes. They are perfect for a true beginner or someone too busy to commit to 30 minutes a day. If you are a beginner, just getting into movement, these can be great to pair with a walk or other gentle movement. They are also great for athletes like runners, rock climbers or dancers who need quick core workouts, but are spending most of their time doing other activities.

How many classes are in Xtend Barre Express? Xtend Barre Express is a 21 day program. Each workout is only 15 minutes long. I love 21 day programs because they are easy to commit to, finish and have that sense of success and progress!

What equipment is needed? All you need is a sturdy chair or ballet barre, a resistance loop, 2-3 pound dumbbells and a mat.

Biggest takeaway? Barre classes are always challenging and extending our limits. These are great for beginners or someone who has been struggling to fit in a workout. Showing up 15 minutes regularly is much better than showing up 2 hours a couple times a month. It’s also a great way to get full body core work in if you have another activity taking up most of your exercise time.

Beachbody Barre Class Option 3: Barre Blend

Barre Blend is taught by Elise Joan. Ellise is one of the most loving and motivational people you will ever ‘meet.’ Aside from providing your body a kick a$$ workout, she helps you clear your mind of negative self talk and find better thought patterns.

I personally loved Xtend barre, but when I started Barre Blend, it was a whole new level of challenge. And that is one thing I love about having a fitness journey – being able to transform in many ways over time.

While both programs are inspired by ballet, pilates and a bit of yoga, Xtend Barre is more detailed and functional while Elise’s take on Barre is more motivation and challenging. That’s why I think it’s best to learn fundamentals and have fun with Andrea and then grow and push your limits with Elise.

How many classes are in Barre Blend? Barre Blend is an 8 week program. Each class is 30 minutes. However the last week, classes are a bit longer, clocking in at 40 minutes.

Biggest takeaway? One reason I love shorter programs is that they are easy to finish. I also love redoing programs and seeing the changes made in just a few short weeks. It is usually challenging for me to take on an 8 week program and not get bored, distracted or jump ship. But, I didn’t have that problem with Barre Blend. Elise is so empowering and motivating I was sad when it was over.

Plus, I made gains in both losing weight, trimming my waist, strengthening my arms and getting closer to my splits! All around win. I’d say this program could be done by a beginner, because it has solid modifications. However, between Xtend Barre and Barre Blend, Barre Blend is more intermediate to advanced where Xtend Barre is more beginner to intermediate.

Beachbody Barre Class Option 4: PPN Barre Blend

Pregnancy and postpartum barre blend is also taught by Elise Joan. Wow, this is a great way to workout in pregnancy. I struggled trying to adapt all my regular classes to my ever changing needs. When I saw this, I breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Elise has a separate set of workouts for each trimester of pregnancy and for postpartum. This way, you can get what you need for exactly where you are.

How many classes are in Barre Blend PPN? There are 5 workouts for each trimester and 2 for postnatal recovery.

How Much Do Barre Classes Cost?

If you’re looking for Barre classes in the wild – I mean out of your home, you are going to be looking at $15-$30 per class. However, the beachbody barre classes are so much more affordable!
